Project QUILTING – Season 4, Challenge 1: A Square in a square…in a square…

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope you are all as excited for the 4th season of Project QUILTING as I am!  I have been trying to patiently wait for this moment – those of you that follow Project QUILTING on facebook know that I haven’t been too good at that patience thing.

I just want to remind everyone that these challenges are meant to be inspirational and FUN!  I know the pressure of a week is on but trust me – it will be so nice to have COMPLETED a quilting project ALREADY in 2013!  Every week that you enter a piece for the challenge you are entered into a hat to win one of the amazing prizes from our sponsors!  Your name will also be added into the final hat at the completion of the season for an opportunity to win the GRAND PRIZE!  Inspiration, fun AND Prizes!?  Can it get much better?

Anyway – before we get to the first challenge I would like to run through the list of prizes and sponsors for this week:

Each challenge that you complete a quilt for your name will be put into hat. One of my three beautiful girls will draw a name randomly for each prize.

***PLEASE NOTE! The photo’s shown from the sponsors are just examples of the amazing items the shops are offering. They are not necessarily the prize you are receiving if you win.***

Alright – I’m not going to make you wait any longer – the first challenge of Season 4 of Project QUILTING is…

The Challenge: A Square in a Square…in a square…

The traditional square in a square quilt block looks like this:

But it could look like this:

  1. IMG_3717-001Your inspiration for this challenge is Square in a Square. Interpret it however you’d like. It is an inspiration, not a pattern, so be creative.

  2. Your project can be any size or shape. It does not need to be a traditional quilt.

  3. Your project must have a name.

  4.   Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge.

  5.   POST your entries with a description of your creative process, including where you are (ie, I create in Madison, WI) and the size of your project by Sunday, January 13th, 2013, at noon, CDT, to this flickr group, Project QUILTING with Persimon Dreams –OR email a picture/description of your completed project to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line.

If you wish to receive critiques on your piece – the good and critical – please add your photo’s to this group as well:

Are you stuck?  Need a little ‘Tim Gunn’ advice during the week?  Or are you just so excited on how things are going along and what to share your WIP?  We have a group for that!

If this is the first Project Quilting challenge you’ve participated in, please email Kim at {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line so that Kim can keep you updated on the behind the scenes going-ons.

NEW THIS SEASON!  Linky Party!

Add blog posts or flickr photo’s of your thought process/works in progress etc throughout the week to the linky party below!  Then we can all easily follow along with you!  This is my very first linky party so if you have any suggestions on how I can make it better please let me know!

With that – good luck to everyone!  Don’t forget – you can find Project QUILTING on Facebook AND I’m sponsoring #talknt THIS Tuesday, January 8th on twitter. It will be a great opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have.  If you’ve never joined into #talknt before I highly recommend it – I look forward to it every Tuesday!

One of my very first quilts…I was originally making it for my brother…it’s still on my bed…I just love it too much.

  2. I am trying to follow your blog, but when I click the subscribe button below it doesn't link up. Please advise how I can add you to my Google Reader.

  3. I don't see a FAQ section, so I just wanted to clarify: the challenge for an absolutely finished project? I.e. quilted and bound? Not just a quilt top?

  4. Yes! The project has to be absolutely finsihed - quilted and bound to qualify for prizes.

  5. That is a good question...I'll have to look into that one...I'll get back to you. Sorry about that!

  6. Would this link work?

  7. A PQ FAQ page is a really good idea. I'll have to put one together! Thanks!

  8. I knew I should have logged off and gone to bed...just found you tonight for the first time and oh I can't resist a I'm going to jump in for some fun! What a fun idea! I'm so glad projects don't have to be HUGE - just finished...I can do this...well...I can try! Thanks for the inspiration.

  9. I'm so glad you didn't go to bed! I'm glad you found us and I'm positive you'll enjoy this challenge! Good luck and have fun!

  10. I'm sure you already have a bunch of questions from previous seasons that others might wonder about. Might save you from answering the same questions over and over.

  11. I know I'm crazy to think about another challenge...but hey...I'm constantly making the next thing so why not try to make it fit...right?!?

  12. I'm the exact same way! It's worth the squeeze :)

  19. Hi, Let me see if I can understand... We cannot use a pattern, but we create our own quilt using your theme? Correct?

Either way, this sounds exciting and I'm glad I discovered this page!

  20. [...] Come back tomorrow to see all the quilts made for the first Project QUITING challenge! [...]

  21. Hi Kristine! I'm glad you found me too! You CAN use a pattern - you can do whatever you want as long as it's a quilt, it's 'inspired by the theme 'square in a square' and it's finished by noon tomorrow :) The second challenge will go up on January 20th. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  22. Oh dear, not sure where I have been hiding out....Yes, today is Jan 13th and yes it just registered in my brain THIS WOULD BE FUN TO DO! I'm probably to LATE to join in for this week :( [[I do have a completed square in a square that I created several years ago...but then...that would'nt be much of a challenge for the week to submit.]]

But is it too late to join in for the remaining challenges?
I've never participated so, not clear on the 'rules'.

  23. I'm so glad to be back doing this again this year! I learned so much last year. I'm challenging myself to learn more this year and to grow in skill and artistic level. I also want to make practical things that I will use in my home. Been slowly redecorating and changing colors so have plenty of ideas. I also have one big blank wall that I want to make a good sized quilt to hang there as a piece of art. I will see how the weeks unfold. :-) THANKS Kim for hosting this!

  24. Kim - wanted to clarify, too. Do projects need to be STARTED in the week of the challenge or can they be UFO's that fit or are made to fit in the challenge?

  25. Sharon - they have to be STARTED the week of the challenge and FINISHED the week of the challenge - they should be projects that are inspired by the challenge given.

  26. So glad you found us! It's not too late to join in for the remaining challenges! The biggest 'rule' of Project Quilting is that the piece has to be started and completed the week of the given challenge. :) Can't wait to see what you come up with!
