Lean and Chubby Monkey Wrench Quilt Block Tutorials

To go along with this months ‘Focus Through the Prism: Monkey Wrench’ Project QUILTING Challenge I’ve made up two tutorials.  Each of these tutorials are single large quilt blocks that measure 20” finished.  Hopefully these provide with you with even more inspiration for this months challenge and I also wanted to give you some examples of what a quilt ‘reading’ a certain color means.  The reason I made two blocks is that you can create Monkey Wrenches in either a 3 x 3 grid or a 5 x 5 grid.  You’ll soon see the difference!

Lean Monkey Wrench Block

This is my 20” ‘Lean Monkey Wrench Block’ – based off a 3 x 3 grid.  This quilt block actually ‘reads’ green.  I want to make sure that you know that even if your quilt must ‘read’ a certain color it’s still okay to use other colors … just not too many other ones or too much of them!

Chubby Monkey Wrench Block

This 20” block is the ‘Chubby Monkey Wrench’ – based off a 5 x 5 grid.  This block ‘reads’ purple!
This block actually initially looked like this:

I wasn’t happy with how much the orange squares popped out … I thought maybe by making the center square orange it would help.

It was bothering me so much that I actually ripped out the center block.

and I replaced it with an orange square.

So my block now looks like this.  I’m still regretting the intensity of the orange.  I wish I would have went with a less saturated orange … more along the lines of coral or peach but I do like this better than the purple in the middle.

These two tutorials  - the Lean and Chubby Monkey Wrench Blocks - will be free until May 10th.  After that they will cost a small fee to view – so don’t wait – download them now!

PS – Can you tell I’m LOVING finally using my spoonflower fabrics!  I can’t believe it took me so long to cut into  them!
