Star Cakes - The Top Ten Videos of 2015 from the Fat Quarter Shop

We’re nearing the end of the Fat Quarter Shop ten day feature of the top 10 videos from 2015.
Today they are showcasing the Star Cakes Tutorial from the Shortcut Quilt Series.

This pattern uses layer cakes and I decided to use Mustang 10 x 10 from Melody Miller of Cotton + Steel and mix it with some Riley Blake Solids.

I just love joining in with the Fat Quarter Shop on their great tutorials.  Even if you don’t have time to make this quilt right now be sure to get the pattern HERE.  It shares with us the coolest way ever to make 8 half -square triangles staring with just two squares of fabric!  I seriously followed along feeling all this doubt … and then before I knew it I had 16 half-square triangles!  SO so so cool!

Because I chose to use a mixture of colors for my background I was left for a bit of a unique situation.  8 sets of 8 distinctly different half square triangles.  At first I thought I’d do a random design adn it would just be wild but then I dreamt about it and this idea came to mind.  Blocking them together to pull out a secondary design.

I decided I wanted to eliminate the sashing.  I really wanted the pattern from the fabrics to be really obvious.  Now I had to decide if I wanted it to be more of a “border”

or more of a “plus” feel.

After much deliberation I decided on creating a border.  I’m in love with this quilt and how different it looks. This is going to be a baby quilt for a little guy some friends of mine are expecting later this year.

Thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop for letting me join in all this fun.
Here’s the kicker!  If you make any of the quilts that are featured in the next two weeks and post photo’s to your instragram account using the hashtags: #starcakesquilt and #FQSTop10 and tag @FatQuarterShop you could win a $100 Gift Card to the Fat Quarter Shop!  The contest ends February 1st.

See what other bloggers did with this great pattern!  (I’m serious … you need to see how they make their half-square triangle blocks … it’s super cool!)
