9.6–SCRAPtastic–Challenge 6 of Project QUILTING Season 9

PQ_instagram-scraptasticProject QUILTING is heading into it’s sixth and final challenge week.  I seriously can’t believe how amazing this season has been.  Did you know that 571 quilts have been made so far this season.  Do you think we could get at least 129 in this week to make Season 9’s overall total to 700 (or more!?)  In order to do this I’m going to need your help in spreading the word, encouraging folks, and getting it done!  I know we can do it!

If you haven’t joined the “Challenge Quilts”group on facebook please head on over and see what it I’m talking about.  Everything you need to know about how Project QUILTING began can be found on THIS page. scrapyard
Before I hand you over to Trish, a reminder: please read through the rules - read all the way to the bottom of this post -  and make sure you understand them. Feel free to ask questions, and we'll do our best to answer quickly. Note that photography of your finished project must be linked at the bottom of this post in order to be eligible for prizes and for the Viewer's Choice voting next week. The link up is in a square format so if you want your quilt in its entirety to show up on the thumbnail be sure to edit it into a square format.

Sharon Holland has been sharing some great photography tips to go along with the Community Sampler Block of the week she’s cohosting with Maureen Cracknell.  If you have time check out a few of her tips via her instagram feed/story!

Hey - it's Trish. So, this is it - 9.6. I'm kinda sad, that the season's drawing to a close. Maybe I'm not quite ready to let it go, yet, even.

But we're not going down quietly! We're burning into this challenge with unprecedented enthusiasm and creativity! We're excited to make, make, make!

And so, this week, let's use some fabric. Lots of fabric.

trimmings

"SCRAPtastic!"

BTW - that title: it's a neologism (link:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologism). I'm determined to make it a real word.

I want you to think scrappy this week. The more fabric the better - and at least 12 fabrics, to be exact. They don't all have to be leftovers, but there MUST BE at least 12 unique fabrics in your final project.

If you’re up for making a quilt that is at least 45” x 60” it would also cover TWO challenges – Project QUILTING and the “Scrap Quilt Challenge” I’m also running!  Head over to this page to see more information about the Scrap Quilt Challenge!  If you don’t want to go that big – it’s ok – it will still count for Project QUILTING!

THE RULES:
1. Your project must use a MINIMUM of twelve (12) fabrics, no matter how small the piece. You, of course, are welcome to use more than 12 if you wish.
2. Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline (March 18 to 25, 2018). Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count toward prizes.
3. Please remember that these projects need to be created during the week of the challenge (started on or after March 18, finished by March 25).
4. Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements:

  • Include patchwork.
  • Include appliqué.
  • Have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.5. Link up a blog post, instagram post, or public facebook post to the linky at the bottom of THIS PAGE by Sunday, March 25, 2018 at noon CDT. Alternately, you may email the picture and description to {lapaceksorchard at gmail dot com} with PROJECT QUILTING in the subject line by 11 am on Sunday, March 25. Yes - that deadline is one hour earlier because it requires more work for Kim.
When you create your PQ entry's blog post or instagram, please include:
  • a description of your creative process,
  • the overall size of your project (it's so hard to tell in a picture!)
  • where you are (ie, I create in Lodi WI)

If you decide to just directly upload your image to the link up party please email Kim this information so it can be shared with everyone else.

Month 3: Prism Dreams for the Dresden Neighborhood Sew Along

Happy 9th day of March and happiest of birthday’s to a fabulous friend of mine – Wendy Franczak, one of the co-founders of Modern Stitching Affair!  If you have a moment to stop by her instagram to say Happy Birthday I know she’d love that!  My plan for today and the next 9 months is to share a new source of inspiration for making a Dresden Neighborhood Quilt Block (or mini quilt … whatever you prefer) and to keep the fun going in the #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL.

Today’s inspiration is my favorite color – ALL of them of course!

I highly recommend getting Joen Wolfrom’s Studio Color Wheel and her book Color Play if you don’t already have it.  I’ve learned so much about color and still reference both of these tools frequently when planning projects.

IMG_0081

To create my color wheel Dresden Neighborhood as accurately as possible I pinned Joen Wolfrom’s Studio Color Wheel to my design wall.  Before I cute each house wedge, I auditioned the fabric on the color wheel to make sure it was the color I wanted.IMG_0247

There are 24 wedges in the Studio Color Wheel and my Dresden Neighborhood only calls for 20 so I had to decide which wedges to leave out.  I tried to spread those out a bit over the wheel so it wasn’t very noticeable that a few wedges were missing.IMG_0237

Once I had all my wedges figured out it was time to sew them down.  I love that I have a wide variety of Aurifil thread colors and had fun picking out colors to do the stitching.  IMG_0267

I decided to use the complementary colors of each house wedge as the roofs and doors.  If you do this I highly recommend not putting away the fabric after you’ve cut your house wedges!  I had to try to remember where each of my fabrics were so I could put the roofs on.  I used a grey Aurifil thread for the final stitching.  I also found some great fabric that had perfectly scaled windows already printed on it so for the larger wedges I used those!  I love the whimsy it adds to this particular neighborhood!  I’m currently working on kits that will have special “material” fabric and it will have window fabric with it too! Stay Tuned!

IMG_0273

Before I knew it – I had my March “Prism Dreams” Dresden Neighborhood for the #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL all pieced together.  This may be my personal favorite neighborhood I’ve made yet!

dresdenSAL

Now it’s your turn!  Let’s see what you come up with for your first Dresden Neighborhood for the #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL!  Feel free to share photos in my facebook group “Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek”, post to instagram with the hashtag #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL and/or link up below!
