April Dresden Neighborhood Round Up

I’m pretty far behind on my “Dresden Neighborhood” round up posts.  I have to admit – after the 9th season of Project QUILTING wrapped up I’ve been enjoying some time away from the computer … completing just the bare minimum.  It felt good to take a little break but it has been tons of fun going through and seeing what folks have been working on!

I’m “rounding up” all the neighborhoods that were posted to the pinned post at the top of my “Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek” facebook group.  Feel free to join and add your photo’s if you’d like me to share.  There are also some AMAZING Dresden Neighborhoods on instagram under the hashtags #DresdenNeighborhood and #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL – be sure to check them out!  Just WOW!!!!Dresden Neighborhood by Daine Phillips

I’m in absolute LOVE with Diane Phillips version – “Corporate Cog”!  Seriously – amazing!  You can read more about her process on her blog HERE.  She shares other Dresden Neighborhood quilts made from the guilds challenge too – incredible!dresden neighborhood kim lantis

And this is also by Sandra Otremba – she named this Dresden Neighborhood – “A River Runs Through It”.  Her creativity is fantastic!dresden neighborhood vivien newton

Vivien Newton created this gorgeous version!  This is the neighborhood that inspired me to use stripes for my April theme.  The colors and patterns in her blocks – just gorgeous!

The final Dresden Neighborhood I’m sharing is by the lovely Kim Van Etten.  Instead of houses – she made barns!  There are quilts on three of the barns and the fences she put between the barns is just wonderful!  I love every little detail on this quilt!

Find out all you need to know about the sew along HERE.  All you really need for this is to purchase my downloadable Dresden Neighborhood pdf Pattern either on craftsy here or etsy here.

If you have a Dresden Neighborhood you’d like me to feature please email me a picture – lapaceksorchard {at} gmail {dot} com OR share in the pinned post in my facebook group “Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek”!

Center of Attention–30 Quilt Blocks in 30 Days with Creatin in the Sticks

This was the most perfect block for me to do today for Creatin in the Sticks “30 Quilt Blocks in 30 Days” Blog Hop and Quilt Along since today is my birthday!

center of attention quilt block by Kim Lapacek

I am running a bit behind on the other blocks but I’m finding I’m quickly catching up – I have seven plus the 15th block – Center of Attention done already!  My middle daughter Capri has also started making these to create a baby quilt for her aunt.  It’s a great pattern for a beginner and she’s doing a wonderful job with it!

I have to admit I woke up with a stomach bug so I’ll be posting LOTS more pictures on Instagram on our progress … just not today.  I posted my very first block HERE if you want to check it out.

Head over to Carla’s blog to see what other designers are up to and join in the fun!  I promise it’s not too late to catch up!

Spelling Bee Quilt: Home {Quilt Along}

Good morning everyone!  I’m excited to be here this morning sharing with you not only my second block in the fun and fabulous Spelling Bee Book Quilt Along but also the adorable little quilt I made from it!

Spelling Bee Book by Lori Holt

Every Saturday for 44 weeks (this is week 28!), bloggers from across the blogiverse are sharing what they’re making with specific letters, symbols or creations from this fun and whimsical book by Lori Holt. house by Kim lapacek - Clover Persimmon Tiny Tiles Cozy Natural Dream Owl Fruit Dots Navy and Orange Gold Stripe

My block today was the house block!  The book not only includes tutorials for letters but some fun little bonus blocks as well!  I love creating quilts with houses on them (shocker right!?) so I signed up for this block right away.  IMG-1390

I used Fruit Dots Navy Gold Stripe from Cotton and Steel for the background. The stripes aren’t perfectly straight or even close to that and I love the effect they create on the block. It looks like the house is a wonky house but it’s really not!  This is perfect for me as I do love an good illusion while I piece.  Cozy Natural Dream Owl was the fabric I used for the main house.  I love how there are owls peeking out everywhere … even in the door window!IMG-1391

Since I posted about creating the letters for my last name – LAPACEK – in January I have now also pieced the house and the apple block!  I had to add an apple to the mini quilt since my family has an apple orchard.  It was just too perfect!  IMG-1389It didn’t take me long to put together the top for my quilted family name banner.  It’s dreary here in Wisconsin and took a little prodding to get the kids out of bed for the picture but I think they look adorable and they love that we now have a fun sign representing our family.

Side note … wouldn’t these little “name” banners be a really fun wedding shower gift for a new couple?  Pick two of the bonus blocks that represents the couple and then put their name in between.  Sounds pretty perfect to me!  (as long as their last name isn’t too long …)

Head over to the Jolly Jabber to see what other folks have been working on with this Quilt Along!

Here is the schedule of Quilters, be sure to visit their Blogs and / or Instagram accounts to see what they are up to and don't forget to go an visit Very Kerry Berry to see her Jar of Hearts block!

Month 4: Striped Sensation for the Dresden Neighborhood Sew Along

Good morning everyone!  I’m writing this up as I sit in a comfortable, quiet hotel room in Iowa City, Iowa.  I’ll be at the Old Capitol Quilter’s Guild today teaching my “Project QUILTING” Workshop and then my trunk show talk.  I had dinner with a couple of the ladies from the guild last night and I’m feeling that today is going to be incredible!Striped Sensation Dresden NeighborhoodBefore I find the local Starbucks, I thought I’d share with you this months inspiration – stripes!  Once again, I failed in time management and I only have my houses stitched on.  I thought about bringing supplies to add the roofs and doors in the hotel last night, but then I thought I’d get your opinion on what you would do. The “Kim” in me wants to make all the roofs in striped fabric too.  But would that be too much?  My other thoughts is go opposite and make all the roofs polka dots!  OR should I just do what I normally do and make the roofs random and not worry about the pattern?
Feel free to leave a comment here or on facebook group – Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek – on what you think I should do for the roofs!
A. Striped Roofs
B. Polka Dot Roofs
C. Random
I cut striped fabrics in both horizontal, vertical and a single diagonal orientations.  I love the movement the stripes create on the houses!  Especially when I have two wedges of vertical stripes adjacent to each other.  I almost wish I would have just cut all the wedges so the stripes were vertical … perhaps you could give it a try and show me how it looks!?
IMG_0614And of course, once the houses are trimmed … a 100% new look appears!IMG_0624
I didn’t debate too long on what fabric I wanted to use for my background.  This large scale poppy print from Laura Gunn was just calling to me from my shelf!  I just love how the poppies “pop” in the background!
I used aurifil thread to stitch the wedges down … next up – the roofs and doors!  I’ll be sure to add in the picture of the finished  “Striped Sensation” Dresden Neighborhood for the April #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL all pieced together.
Now it’s your turn!  Let’s see what you come up with for your  Dresden Neighborhood for the #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL!  Feel free to share photos in my facebook group “Quilt and Dream Along with Kim Lapacek”, post to instagram with the hashtag #DresdenNeighborhoodSAL and/or link up below!
